After service as an editor for a newspaper and as a press operator at General Motors plants in Flint and St. Louis, Missouri, Little returned to Central Michigan University (now Central Michigan University) where he earned an M.B.A. degree in 1963.

His first book, WILD WEST BLUES, was published in 1968 by Funk & Wagnalls; it was nominated for a National Book Award for Nonfiction in 1969. His second book, RAGGEDY ANN (published 1970), was also nominated for a National Book Award; it became the best-selling children's book of that year and has sold over four million copies worldwide.
